Sid Jacobson JCC’s Community Needs Food Bank

Another local food pantry I would like to shout out is the Sid Jacobson JCC’s Community Needs Food Bank. Partnering with Island Harvest Food Bank, the goal of Community Needs Food Bank is to ensure food security for all individuals and families living in Nassau County.

While COVID-19 was at its peak, many Nassau County residents were struggling with food insecurity, and something needed to be done. As many food pantries shut down due to the pandemic, Community Needs Food Bank opened up even more and directly served families faced with food insecurity across Long Island. To date, they have donated thousands of pounds of food, household items, and personal protective equipment to the neediest. Their donations ensured that the elderly, new parents and those with compromised immune systems could stay safe at home during the pandemic.

Many people associated with the JCC, like me, were eager to help out, and they worked with the food bank to deliver food and other needed goods right to residents’ doorsteps. We were called the Mobile Recovery Unit for the food bank. Residents would contact us, requesting specific grocery items for us to bring them, and we would pick them up at the food bank and deliver them right to their homes. Most of the residents were the elderly, because, at that time, it was a risk for them even to leave their homes. It was a miracle what Community Needs Food Bank was able to do for those in Nassau County, and all of Long Island, during such a traumatizing time.

Today, even with COVID-19 slowing down, Community Needs Food Bank is still working miracles. There are still many people suffering from food insecurity, especially the elderly. The Sid Jacobson JCC’s Community Needs Food Bank is taking this issue on with all it can, but it can’t do it alone. If you would like to help out and donate, please click here.
