After volunteering on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning, Montana, I saw firsthand how devastating food insecurity is for Native Americans. We think it’s bad enough for ordinary Americans, but people living on reservations suffer much more than people realize. One study found that 69% of people in the Blackfeet Nation experienced food insecurity at some point in the year, while the national rate of food insecurity is 12.5%. One organization dedicated to improving food security within the Blackfeet Nation is FAST Blackfeet.
FAST Blackfeet’s goals are the following:
- Ensure daily access to healthy, nutritious food for all.
- Ensure the right to healthy, culturally appropriate foods produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods and the right to define our own food and agricultural systems.
FAST Blackfeet truly is a wonderful organization that has been helping the Blackfeet tribe for years, and to keep this trend going, they need our help. This November, no1-hungry will launch a fundraiser to aid FAST Blackfeet in distributing food to the entire Blackfeet Nation. Our goal this season is $2,000.
To help reach this goal and improve food security for the Blackfeet Nation, you can donate here. One donation can go a long way!
