Why More Money Should Go Towards Education

It’s quite simple. If we want our society to improve, we need more education, and we need to put more money and time into improving our country’s education. Not only can more education help our country improve and make more advancements in society, it can also lower the overall poverty rate.

A study in 2020 showed that 24.7 percent of adults living under the poverty line in the United States had no high school diploma. 13.2 percent of adults living under the poverty line went to high school, but not to college. 8.4 percent of adults living in poverty went to some college. Clearly, a lack of education correlates to an increased chance of living in poverty. But what this study doesn’t show is how many people living in poverty have not even graduated high school, or even attended high school, or even had an education. Children living in poverty have a very high risk of dropping out of school before reaching high school. This tends to happen because their parents were not educated themselves, so the trend is passed on to the children. If more and more kids keep dropping out of school and do not receive a formal education, poverty rates will only increase.

I believe that education is the key to diminishing poverty in our society. When we look at all of the successful people in the world, almost all of them went to college or had some form of education. If we put more money into programs that pay for education for those who cannot afford it, or give more money to schools in poverty stricken areas to improve learning, we can start to decrease this trend of people living in poverty without an education. College graduates have a 95 percent chance of finding a job after college. If we can have more people go to college, I think it’s pretty obvious that our society will improve.
