At another wonderful food pantry that I typically attend on Tuesdays, we essentially do the same thing as we do at Community Solidarity: pack and organize boxes of food to distribute to those in need. The only difference between the two pantries is the quality and abundance of food. At this pantry that I am just telling you about, it is run out of the Manhasset EOC, named Shelter Rock Church Food Pantry. At this food pantry, the quality of the food is much better, however, the abundance of food is slightly less. Whereas at Community Solidarity, the quality of food is far worse, yet the abundance is slightly greater. This is because of the environments that the two pantries are in. At the Shelter Rock Church Food Pantry, it is located in a better socio-economic area than Community Solidarity. Most of the people who come are in slightly better condition than those who attend Community Solidarity. And as you may guess, the abundance of food is slightly less at the Shelter Rock Church Food Pantry because there are less people who come (less people who suffer from food insecurity). Now I am inclined to believe that because of the wealthier area of Manhasset, and partially Great Neck as well, this leads to better quality food for the pantry to give away. When compared to the Hempstead area, it is a poorer area and therefore the food quality of those pantries will be much worse as there is less funding for the pantries and less people who can donate. Also, the food at Community Solidarity is often smushed or expired as this pantry does not have the same resources as the Shelter Rock Church Food Pantry to keep their food ripe and in good shape.
Overall, my main point here is that pantries in different areas will always be different because of how their environments influence them. A pantry in a poor area will often have lower quality food when compared to the food of a pantry in a wealthier-ish area. A pantry with more food will likely have more people coming to get food. A pantry with less resources to preserve their food will often have expired or beat top food.
Due to these poor conditions of Community Solidarity, soon I will be looking to raise money for this pantry at a fundraiser at my high school in order to keep the food there in better shape so the people who need this food will be much happier. And due to the lower abundance of food at the Shelter Rock Church Food Pantry, I will strive to raise money for this great pantry as well to try to gather more food to help those in my community.
